What Qualifies as a Dental Emergency
A dental emergency is any dental problem that is causing you significant pain, that could result in permanent damage if left untreated, or that is interfering with your ability to go about your day. If you are unsure whether your situation qualifies as an emergency, we encourage you to call our office. Our team will help you assess the urgency of your concern and advise you on the best next step.
Common dental emergencies include a tooth that has been knocked out completely, a tooth that has been pushed out of its normal position or loosened by an impact, a cracked, chipped, or fractured tooth, a severe or persistent toothache that does not respond to over-the-counter pain relievers, swelling in the gums, jaw, or face that may indicate an infection or abscess, a lost or broken crown, filling, or other dental restoration, bleeding from the mouth that does not stop on its own, and damage to the soft tissues of your lips, cheeks, gums, or tongue.
Each of these situations benefits from prompt professional attention. The sooner you are seen, the better the outcome is likely to be.

What to Do Before You Reach Our Office
Knowing what to do in the minutes immediately following a dental emergency can make a meaningful difference in the outcome of your treatment. Here is some general guidance for the most common situations.
If a tooth has been knocked out, handle it only by the crown and avoid touching the root. Rinse it gently with water if it is dirty, but do not scrub it or remove any tissue that may be attached. If possible, place the tooth back into the socket and hold it in place with gentle pressure. If you cannot reinsert it, place it in a small container of cold milk or hold it between your cheek and gum to keep it moist. Getting to our office within 30 minutes gives you the best chance of saving the tooth.
If a tooth is cracked or broken, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to reduce swelling. Save any pieces of the tooth if you can and bring them with you to your appointment.
If you are experiencing severe tooth pain, rinse your mouth with warm salt water and gently floss around the affected tooth to make sure nothing is lodged between your teeth. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage discomfort until you reach our office. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums, as this can cause tissue irritation.
If a crown or filling has come loose or fallen out, keep the restoration if you still have it and bring it to your appointment. Avoid chewing on the affected side and contact our office so we can see you as soon as possible.
In all cases, the most important step is to call Isabella Avenue Dentistry at (619) 435-0147 so our team can advise you and prepare for your arrival.

What to Expect During Your Emergency Visit
When you arrive at our Coronado office for an emergency appointment, our team will prioritize getting you out of pain and stabilizing your condition as quickly as possible. Dr. Leslie Strommer or Dr. Amy Jagger will perform a thorough evaluation of the affected area, which may include digital X-rays to assess the extent of the damage beneath the surface.
Once the evaluation is complete, your dentist will explain what has happened, discuss your treatment options in clear and straightforward terms, and recommend the best course of action. In many cases, we are able to provide definitive treatment on the same day, including placing a same day CEREC crown for a cracked or broken tooth, re-cementing or replacing a lost restoration, treating an infection with medication or drainage, performing an emergency extraction if a tooth cannot be saved, and providing temporary stabilization for a tooth that has been loosened or displaced.
Our goal is to relieve your pain, protect your tooth and surrounding structures, and provide you with a clear plan for any follow-up care that maybe needed.

Preventing Dental Emergencies
While not every dental emergency can be prevented, there are simple steps you can take to reduce your risk. Wearing a custom mouthguard during contact sports and recreational activities is one of the most effective ways to protect your teeth from impact injuries. Our team can create a comfortable, well-fitting mouthguard that is designed specifically for your smile.
Keeping up with your regular dental exams and cleanings also plays an important role in prevention. Routine visits allow our dentists to identify early signs of decay, cracks, or weakened restorations before they develop into emergencies. Avoiding habits such as chewing on ice, biting into very hard foods, and using your teeth to open packaging can also help protect your teeth and dental work from unexpected damage.
If you grind your teeth at night, a custom night guard can help prevent cracking and excessive wear that may lead to emergency situations over time.
